What are vascular conditions?

Vascular conditions are diseases affecting the blood vessels that carry blood around the body.

Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the organs and limbs. Veins return blood to the heart. The aorta is the body’s largest artery and carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

Vascular disease can develop when a blood vessel becomes narrowed, blocked, enlarged, weakened or damaged. Some conditions develop slowly and can be monitored, while others require planned treatment or urgent medical assessment.

The appropriate pathway depends on the condition, the symptoms, the blood vessels involved and the patient’s general health.

What symptoms may indicate vascular disease?

Possible symptoms of vascular disease include leg pain, persistent swelling, visible veins, changes in skin colour or temperature, cold feet and wounds that are slow to heal.

Common vascular symptoms include:

  • Pain or cramping in the leg while walking

  • Aching, heaviness or tiredness in the legs

  • Persistent ankle or lower-leg swelling

  • Visible, twisted or bulging veins

  • Itching or skin changes around the ankle

  • Coldness or numbness in the foot

  • Changes in the colour of a leg or foot

  • A wound or ulcer that is slow to heal

  • Pain in the foot or leg while resting

  • A pulsing sensation in the abdomen

  • Symptoms following a previous DVT

  • Concerns arising from an ultrasound, CT or MRI scan

These symptoms do not always mean that a person has vascular disease. Similar symptoms can arise from joints, muscles, nerves, the lymphatic system or other medical conditions.

Clinical assessment and appropriate investigation are therefore important before deciding on treatment.
